Understanding how sale back orders change with and without stock allocation

Stock allocation enabled

If stock allocation is enabled for your site:

  • Sale back orders will update every time you save a sales order. Stock allocation will allocate stock to the sale order and update the sale back order quantity

Stock allocation disabled

The quantity on sales back order does not update when you add lines or save the order. As the system does not know which stock is allocated to the sale order line. The system can't be sure what stock is available to supply the order. If you want sales back orders to update as soon as you enter them, you nee to turn on stock allocation. Stock allocation requires that stock on your system is very accurate.

If stock allocation is disabled for your site:

  • Sale back orders will update if the sale order is cancelled. If you cancel the order, all the back order lines will also be cancelled.
  • Sale back orders will update when a sale shipment extracted from the sale order is posted. When you post a sale shipment, the system knows the quantity supplied. So it can update the quantity back ordered.
  • Sale back orders will update if the quantity ordered on the sale order line is changed and their is currently a quantity on back order for the line. If there is a quantity on back order for a line and you increase or decrease the quantity ordered. The system will increase or decrease the quantity back ordered to line up with the new quantity on order for the product.
